Recommend me a lift

Postby Chris » Sun Mar 25, 2012 5:28 pm

Been a long time since I looked at lifts and it's tax return time. Top price is $1000, so no long arms, I need shocks. I would like 3 - 3.5"

2002 TJ. What's out there? I would like to buy it in about 2 weeks.

Also, cheap SYE and a Drive shaft... right now I have a D35, and I don't have the funds for an 8.8 / d44 right away, but it will be coming.

I think alot of the companys out there are pretty close in terms of quality. I think what you should look for is the most complete lift you can get in your price range.

Pretty much every kit comes with springs, shocks and sway bar extensions.I don't have a ton of TJ knowledge, but consider things like a drop pitman arm, extended brake lines, rear track bar relocation bracket, a new track bar for the front, and aftermarket lower control arms.

http://zoneoffroad.com/product?ki=21&gr=-1

You could probably get a great lift for around $500 and use the rest to put together an 8.8. What gears do you have?

Pricey is right... I do like the the adj arms, but $2000 is a little more than I wanted to spend.

Opinions on 4" short arms? I wanted to stay with 3" because I thought I heard driving sucks with 4" and short arms... I DD 22 miles each way all highway so comfort is a huge factor.

I saw this http://zoneoffroad.com/product?ki=36&gr=-1for the price I could toss the included shocks and buy something better.

Billy I have 3.07s so when I get a new rear end a regear is defiantly needed.

I've wheeled with Chris Hetu from FTR. He's running hiline fenders with 2in budget boost and 35in MTRS. I've seen some pictures of homade hilines using stock fenders, but havn't seen any good writeups about how much reshaping needs to be done to relocate the fenders up. Reading many forums, many are keeping the spring height low and modifying the body. Replacement fenders may seem pricey, but much cheaper than some lift systems.

you can bolt in XJ hp30s on TJs right? I know jack shit about em... I would pick up a cheapo 100 dollar hp30 with 3.55s in it, an 8.8 with the same, slap that fucker together and lift it a couple inches. If you want a TJ rearend to rip all the brackets off of (kinda ghetto but works) to put on the 8.8 there is one sitting in an old boat in the woods a few hundred feet from my house, I'll drag it out if you want.

I would go with an LP from a ZJ with 3.73s and an 8.8 with a limited slip. He needs the gearing for street driving more

I will say this after having several combos on my TJ..From long arms, short arms etc

Currie Arms with flex joint on both ends- all 8
Bilstein Shocks- More travel the better 5100 series
Progressive springs, Rough Country,Currie and I think BDS are progressive
Currie/JKS tracbar's
Do not use a Drop Pitman!

This is more than your budget but look in the classifieds you may find some deals on JeepForum/Pirate etc. In my experience this is the best riding/performing combo on a TJ. If you want anymore info just ask when it comes to putting on and taking shit off a TJ i've done it :flipoff2:

Good info and I like the idea of lower and cutting for bigger tires.

Ive seen the arms go for $500 on Jeepforum but I agree they are very expensive,You will never have a loose joint with them.

Bilsteins were $300 for 4
My springs were $150 2.5" RC
Tracbars I think $250 front and $130 rear

I was just checking out the 4" RC kit... it has taken me 4 years to commit to going more than my budget boost... Hiline and 2.5" sounds great, but lets be honest, I am never going to get around to it

Opinion of drivability with a 4" lift? They have 2 kits:
http://www.roughcountry.com/jeep_tj_4.html - with this I could have some extra cake for an adj track bar, SYE and a CV shaft

http://www.roughcountry.com/jeep_tj_4x.html - has arms with "Johnny style joints" and the track bar... still would need a SYE and CV (I can probably swing the extra cash)

I think that cheaper option still comes with alot of extras. Seems like a good deal and I bet the vendors on pirate could knock a few bucks off the price tag for you.

I have a quote request out to a pbb vendor for the 2 - 4" kits and the 3.25" kit... which has 2.5" springs and .75" spacers and will still let me clear a 33 w/ a lower COG. Not sure which way I want to go still though.

The cheaper kits will allow me to get the adj track bar, a sye and a new cv drive shaft almost right away. 33s are going to wait until I can get an 8.8 cause of the driving to work with 3.07s and 31s sucks bad enough.

Opinions on RC adj track bar or the Rubicon Express one? They are defiantly cheaper than currie... but I don't want something cheap like rusty's that I have heard stories of it breaking on the highway.

4" On short arms and those Rough Country shocks will make you want to beat kittens with a hammer after a few miles. Atleast the Jeep I rode in with that combo,RC springs are great though and I ran some of there Johnny Joint uppers and they werent bad. A little sloppy but no clunking.

Tracbars- You can run the Cheaper RC bar in the back but you will want a quality bar in the front. JKS has a Johnny Joint on the frame end and Rubber on the axle end. Quality piece and will keep the Death Wobble away

Bilsteins for sure. Fuck lifting it just hack the fenders off and you'll run those 33s no problem. I would stay under 4" if you could....go with the 3" kit and you'll be fine.

So far what I am thinking:

3.25 lift (2.5" springs, .75" spacers)
SYE and CV - I think they are also RC, $468 for both sounds good?
I am going to ask about a discount if I don't take the shocks... I may buy the Bilsteins either way and try and sell the shocks.
RE Trackbar - it is better than stock, and I am only adding about an inch so I assume it is going to be fine... plus it is half the price.
This should all be ordered in the next two weeks - waiting for my tax return.

At some point I'll save up for the Currie CAs. If I can find them somewhere for $500 I'll grab them.
Anyone willing to weld an 8.8 with the Artec truss when I can find one?

SYE - it's just a regular old 231 case right? Talk to Jeff at Crown, I think he can get you a good deal on that.

I am not sure what you would be paying for a driveshaft but I got mine for 30 at the junkyard and then had it shortened and rebalanced for like 120 or so at Mitchell Drivetrain in Shrewsbury.
