A technical write up on tire width

Postby mmerlina on Tue Mar 09, 2010 10:57 pm

A guy over on JF sent me this to read over when considering new tires. It takes a while to read cause it gets pretty technical in some areas.. but it's all good information that makes lots of sense..

Great read Mike! Only true problem is that MOST tire manufacturers market "flotaion sizes". Try to find tall, narrow tires and your choices become very limited. Interco does offer a radial swamper in a 35-10.5R15 flavor...If you're interested.

Yep I'm noticing that the goodyear mtr's only come in 12.5" when you're up to 35". There have been several people that have recommended those to me.. the more I read the more I like them. And they don't break the bank either.

I do like the LTBs but they're not very practical for everyday driving. I remember driving down the road in Anthony's cherokee and it was loud. I was weighing whether or not to run my bfg a/t's for daily driving and swap them out for wheeling weekends.. but that'll get old fast. And plus storing a spare set of tires is a pain in the ass for me.. I have a hard enough time finding a home for my hard top in the good weather.

MTRs are looking better and better. I know you like the Trxus MTs.. I looked at those too. They seem to be a little more expensive. I haven't ruled them out though. You're on your second set if I remember correctly..

Swapping back and forth SUCKS! I've done it before. I'm on my 3rd set of TRXUS, yet I was waiting for Irok ND(non-directional) in 315/75r16 - they were not released until after I got these.

I'm waiting to see how the new style MTR's hold up. My stock ones were ok off-road, but were no where near as good in rain/snow - on road, compared to the TRXUS. I think it's the softer rubber compound.

Theres always next time.

Don't forget as you go up in height you want to consider going out in width for stability. I really liked the stability of the procomp extreme mts 35-12.5 15 on 8" rims w/3.75 backspacing with the lift you have now. however when I went up the additional 3" I didn't have the same stability feeling anymore. Going to the 37-13.50 15 pitbulls on 10" w/3.75 bs rims, I gained another 4" in overall width and it feels good and stable again. I can't say enough about the ext mt's quiet, good road manners, great in the woods. It's unfair to compare the pitbulls to them cause the pbs aren't radial, but they are a huge handfull on the road in comparison.

Yep I hear ya Mark.. I'm probably going to go with a 12.5 and get wheels with less backspacing to kick my stance out because I do feel a bit unstable after going up that extra 3" with the RE lift.

Songy I did some searching on the IROK ND's and there's not really too much feedback about them via google. Lots of people are saying they wear fast. Most people say they are good offroad.. but nobody says much about onroad manners.

I don't think anyone would recommend iroks for road use!

And tall tires are cool for being balanced, but the stability factor sucks. Q78s are allegedly 35.5x10.7
