Hi there Chris Ryan, just wanted to say hello. You gave me some great advice on JF.com about joining a MA-based 4x4 club. Where do you recommend I post, so as to get to know the 'personalities' as you suggested?

Thanks so much,

Hey david,

I would make an "introduction" post in the general discussion forum to...say hello!!

Excellent, thanks very much, Mr. President!

Looks like I'll need to beef up my Jeep a little before I can come along :brickwall. I reviewed your club's info and I've got a couple questions:
1. I just bought brand new tires 2 months ago.. BFG A/Ts 245/75/R15.. Last I heard, thats like a 27 or 28 inch tire I think.. Would that automatically mean I have to look elsewhere for a club? I'm not looking for anything extreme.. If there were a ranking system based on experience, I'd be below a rookie.. a total 'noob'.. Just want to get out and try my basically stock heep to see how much I really like it I guess.

2. In regards to a "rear recovery point." If I installed a hitch at some point, would that be acceptible? Or must I try to find a rear tow hook or aftermarket bumper with shackles?

Thanks again!

i run a just a hitch as a tow point in the rear. that wont be a problem.

and just my .02, but i think 28" mudders could work on a good number of trails we run.

The Suki is so wrong it is right. You might not be able to do some of the stuff, but as I found out this weekend. There are usually a safe way around the really gnarly stuff. Welcome. Hope to see you out there!

245/75/15 = 29.5x9.6/15

As long as you stay away from the deep muddy stuff, you should be able to do most trails. With smaller tires, where you point them is more critical than if they're really big, so you'll get good at picking lines real quick!! Eventually I'm sure you'll find some larger tires, just like everyone else!!

A hitch is perfect for a rear recovery point. Other than a solid aftermarket/fabbed rear bumper, it's the next best thing for rear recovery on an XJ since it distributes the forces over a large area, unlike a tiny tow hook.

Got front hooks? Should be good to go!

Oh, and with no lift, and small tires, I'd bring a spare tie rod, or get an heavy duty one so yours doesn't bend!!

Just installed the front hitch on my Dakota. I've got torsion keys to put up front and lift blocks for the rear to put in. I'll be putting 285 75 r16 tires on the rig once the lift is installed. I know it's not a Jeep but it's what I have. It should be able to hold it's own on the trails until I can upgrade. I'm currently located in Monson, MA and am interested in joining the club.

Funny you say locker. Blew an axe seal and apparently I need to get into the diff to remove the axles on my Chrysler 8.25" 29 spline rear end to do the seals. So I was thinking take a few more parts out and put in a lunch box at the same time. Open rear end for now.
