what do you guys think of this thing

Postby mmerlina on Mon Jun 14, 2010 6:53 pm

There's a guy in NH selling this thing. It's home made and he said he's carried a 35" BFG MT around on it for the past 3 years without a problem. And yes that is an ammo can for storage.

He wants a $100 bucks for it. Only thing is, is that he's 2 hours away from me.. so I didn't want to head out there for nothing. It looks built pretty well.. I dunno, what do you guys think?

A decent custom made rear bumper/carrier is somewhere between $600-$800. I dunno, I'm looking for opinions. I can't really make out how beefy the hinges are or how it latches... maybe I'll ask for some closer pics in those areas.

Yeah I just asked him for some overall measurements and pics of the hinges and latch. If I'm going to drive 4 hours for this thing I want to come home with it.

Might take some fancy footwork to get it mounted.. he had some aftermarket bumper he built it off of. I still have those gay bumperettes that I'd lose.. then figure something out from there.

And my tailgate won't swing open.. he had a solid back with no opening so it wasn't built for it. But that's no big deal, and I'd sure I could figure something out if I wanted to.

Driving directions to Marlow
Suggested routes
I-93 N and NH-9 W
96.2 mi 1 hour 55 mins

Marlow, NH? Somewhere in the middle of friggen no where. Looks like he put a lot of work into it. I like the idea of the ammo can storage.. I can always use extra space to stick crap. Never enough room in these things.

I asked him to email me a couple pics of the hinges and latch.. and get an overall dimension to figure out if it'll fit in my car. Maybe one night this week or this weekend I'll go up there.

Well I got the pics I was looking for, close up on a hinge and the latch system. This thing looks built, for 100 bucks I think I'm just going to go get it. It looks pretty god damn beefy to me.

Anthony I might just drive up there one night this week that I'm not so fucking exhausted from work, or worst comes to worst, this weekend.

The only reason Im holding on to the quad is that even if something happens I have something to wheel. After the Heep's done I'm probably selling it.

What's the thickness of the main bumper? As long as it's up to par you could rework it, if needed. I wouldn't like not being able to use the tailgate. The first thing I would do, is make the bumper work with the tailgate.

Yeah judging by the way this thing is built I'm sure he went with some beefy stock. I'm actually headed out to go get it in about 15 minutes.

And Denny, I have a storage box in the back that actually flips up as opposed to having a drawer. So not being able to open the tailgate isn't a huge deal to me.. I mean it's not my first choice but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. You can see the hinges i the picture towards the front.

It makes it kind of a pain in the ass when the soft top is folded down (admittedly my oversight, I built it when the hard top was on and didn't consider that.....), but other than that it works great for me. It was built 50% for storage and 50% for something for the dog to ride on. That's why it was carpeted so he doesn't slide around.

I went to get this thing, I think it's great. Needs a little work and some grease, maybe a modification for the tailgate we'll see.. but other than that I just gotta find a way to mount it up and I'm golden.

Bump, this guy reminded me of you. He has all kinds of trucks and parts and stuff there that he buys to part out, etc. He is like a New Hampshire Middle-of-fucking-no-where Bump.

I always open my tailgate for seating or table space when I have it out. It just ain't the same when I do it with one of the wagons.
