Big Nick's little Jeep

Postby Jay » Tue Mar 30, 2010 1:22 pm

We attempted to do a motor swap on Nick's jeep this past weekend. Friday night went well. We removed the front of the jeep along with everything in the way minus the intake and exhaust (waited on Nick's bro in law with his fancy air tools from the shop). Day 2 after 4 hours of battling one of those stupid reverse torx that stripped we finally got the old engine out.

Cheap 3" lift... remove the engine!

A work bench UJ would be proud of. Pop tarts and beer:

We also found out why nick's jeep didn't run well.... it had a fat lazy guy for an engine:
Image

So we swapped out for the good oil pan off the old engine and found we needed the old valve cover (we had bought a seal for that one not the one for the new engine). We called it quits for the day with the engine awaiting the flywheel put on and then reassembly. But on sunday we found we where missing a critial part.

Old engine:

New engine:

we had a bought anew pilot bearring but it didn't come with the sleeve. Since our new motor came out of an auto we were missing it. The old one wouldn't come out even with the help of Dave at Dave's Custom Creations. He tried all his tricks and said the sleeve had been pushed way too far in and was stuck bad. But I did snap a pick of the cool dodge he has down there:
Image
So we had to abandon our project for the weekend since every parts place was either closed or didn't have what we needed. We left with the engine awaiting its pilot bearring. Moral was low:
Image

So we shifted our efforts to weilding a new muffler, fixing a control arm, and repairing my coolant leak on my jeep instead so that I can drive it to work again. Least one jeep is driveable this weekend. Hope to get the parts tomorrow and finish next weekend. Thanks to those I called and bugged for advice lol.

got it all back up together and runnign Saturday night. Kind of annoying that we forgot to do the throwout bearring and it started squeaking but allwell. Passed inspection fine. So now I can use this for a few weeks so I can address the issues with my junk and maybe make a run or two this year :p

So some progress yesterday/today

This morning I got the rear axle out (putting in one with 3.55's instead of 3.07s) and the old leafs and shocks.
Parts list

Easiest front leafspring bolts I have ever had on an xj! 1 came out but the sleeve was stuck and the otherside came right out!

haha shit, I never realized Dave's Custom Creations was the place I used to drive by every day on my way to work. He's got some cool stuff up there. Not sure I like the fullsize pickup but then again big pickups aren't my thing.

Rear is mostly done. Just need to bleed the brakes and get the shocks taken care of.

Mean rake! lol

Started the front tonight. Hope to have it done in a few days.

Put on a JCR bumper for him a while back along with some Teraflex 1.5" shackles.

He also picked up a rear tire carrier bumper today.

ended up not using the factory bumper corners.

One ton steering installed a while back, unibody stiffeners, rocker gaurds, Clayton tranny crossmember, and Rock Krawler 3 link installed last fall. Needs alignment, trim rocker guards to fit 36's,, bump stops and proper length shocks after we figure out height. Trussed 30 needs gearing/locker swap done to be installed, 44 needs gearing, locker and disc brakes done to be installed then Nick should be good for some trails. Might wheel on the 33s/3.55 stock axles for now while we wait on getting gears/lockers done if my jeep is done too.

Nice rig! My XJ only has 35-inch Dick Cepek tires. I installed 5" lift and trimmed up the front and bumpstopped.
